Describir una imagen puede parecer una actividad sencilla, pero hacerlo en inglés requiere mucho más que nombrar lo que ves. Necesitas organizar tus ideas, seleccionar información relevante y encontrar diferentes maneras de explicar lo que está ocurriendo.

En esta actividad te traemos imágenes acompañadas de preguntas guía que te ayudarán a construir tu respuesta paso a paso. Puedes comenzar describiendo elementos concretos y, a medida que avances, incorporar detalles, relaciones, interpretaciones o posibles situaciones lo que te ayudará a practicar diferentes recursos de comunicación oral: describir, explicar, comparar, interpretar y desarrollar ideas a partir de un estímulo visual.

Recuerda, una misma imagen puede dar lugar a diferentes interpretaciones, a veces contamos las historias diferente, aprender a expresar lo que observas y explicar cómo llegaste a esa interpretación.

Puedes realizar la actividad con otra persona o practicar de manera individual. Si trabajas por tu cuenta, intenta responder en voz alta y grabarte para después escuchar cómo desarrollaste tus ideas y tu pronunciación.

LOOK & DESCRIBE

A1+

At A1+, the goal is to use simple English to talk about people, objects, places, colors, and actions. Focus on what you can clearly see and use short sentences to describe the picture.

Speaking time: 1 minute

Questions to guide you:

  1. Where are the people?
  2. How many people can you see?
  3. What are they doing?
  4. What can you see around them?
  5. What colors can you see?
  6. What do you think they are doing?

Challenge: Describe the picture using at least 5 complete sentences. Try to include: WHO → WHERE → WHAT → DETAILS

DESCRIBE & CONNECT

A2

At A2, the goal is to go beyond naming what you see. Try to describe the situation, make simple connections, and explain what you think is happening.

Speaking time: 1–2 minutes

Questions to guide you:

  1. What is happening in the picture?
  2. What do you think happened before this moment?
  3. What might happen next?
  4. How do you think the people feel? Why?
  5. Have you ever been in a similar situation?
  6. What would you do if you were there?

Challenge: Describe the picture and create a small story around it. Try to include: WHAT YOU SEE → WHAT HAPPENED → WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN NEXT

INTERPRET & DEVELOP

B1

At B1, the goal is to use the picture as a starting point for interpretation and personal connections. Don’t just describe what is visible. Explain what you think is happening and support your ideas.

Speaking time: 2 minutes

Questions to guide you:

  1. What do you think is happening in this situation?
  2. What might have happened before this moment?
  3. What do you think each person is thinking or feeling?
  4. What details in the picture support your interpretation?
  5. Have you experienced or witnessed something similar?
  6. What do you think will happen next?

Challenge: Give your interpretation and support it with details from the picture. Try to use: OBSERVE → INTERPRET → EXPLAIN → CONNECT

INTERPRET & SPECULATE

B2

At B2, the goal is to move from describing the image to exploring what it could represent. Consider different interpretations and use the visual information to support your ideas.

Questions to guide you:

  1. What story do you think this picture tells?
  2. What different explanations could there be for what is happening?
  3. What might have happened before this moment?
  4. How might the situation develop from here?
  5. What social or cultural ideas could this picture represent?
  6. Would you interpret the situation differently in another context? Why?

Challenge: Give one interpretation, then consider another possible explanation. Try to structure your response: INTERPRET → SUPPORT → SPECULATE → ALTERNATIVE

ANALYZE & DISCUSS

C1

At C1, the picture becomes a starting point for a broader discussion. Instead of focusing only on what is happening, explore the assumptions, relationships, cultural ideas, or social issues that the image might suggest.

Speaking time: 2–3 minutes

Questions to guide you:

  1. What assumptions might someone make when looking at this picture?
  2. What different interpretations could the situation invite?
  3. What might the image suggest about the people, their relationships, or their environment?
  4. Could the situation be interpreted differently depending on someone’s cultural background?
  5. What broader social issue or idea could this picture be connected to?
  6. What information would you need to see or know before reaching a conclusion?

Challenge: Move beyond the picture. Use it to develop an argument or broader idea. Try to structure your response: OBSERVE → INTERPRET → QUESTION → BROADEN → CONCLUDE
