A SMALL SURPRISE AT THE CAFÉ

A1+

A simple story about a normal afternoon that suddenly changes. Read the situation, meet the characters and continue the story using simple English to describe what happens next.

It is Saturday afternoon. Luna is at a small café near her home. She is sitting at a table and drinking coffee. There are many people in the café, but it is quiet. Luna is with her brother Leo. They are talking about their weekend.

“What do you want to do tomorrow?” Leo asks.

Luna looks outside. It is sunny, and she wants to go to the park.

Luna is 25 years old. She likes coffee, music and going to the park. She has a small blue bag.

Leo is Emma’s brother. He likes sports and takes photos with his phone. He wants to play football tomorrow.

Suddenly, Leo looks under the table. His phone is not there.

“Where is my phone?”

Luna looks around. The phone is not on the table. It is not in Leo’s bag either. Leo stands up and looks around the café.

Continue the story.

  • What do Emma and Leo do?
  • Where is the phone?
  • What happens when they find it?
  • Try to use simple sentences and describe the actions in order.

You can use:

First…
Then…
Next…
Finally…

If you need ideas, answer these questions:

  • Where do they look first?
  • Who helps them?
  • What do they find?
  • How does Leo feel?
  • What do they do after they find the phone?

Speaking challenge: Tell the rest of the story for 1 minute.

THE WEEKEND PLAN

A2

A weekend plan doesn’t always go as expected. Follow the story and use the past and future to explain what happened, what changed and what the characters are going to do next.

Last Friday, Daniel and Sara decided to spend the weekend in a small town near the coast. They wanted to visit a local market, walk around the town and have dinner at a restaurant near the beach.

They were excited because they had never visited the town before. On Saturday morning, they left home early. The weather was warm, and they were listening to music in the car.

Daniel loves exploring new places. He usually makes the plans when he travels.

Sara enjoys trying new food and taking photos. She would like to visit the local market first.

They have different ideas about what they want to do, but they are both excited about the trip.

While they were driving, it started to rain. A few minutes later, Daniel saw a sign on the road. The road to the town was closed. Their original plan was no longer possible. Sara looked at her phone and said:

“We need a new plan.”

Continue the story.

  • What did Daniel and Sara do?
  • Where did they go instead?
  • What were they going to do?
  • Did they enjoy the new plan?

Use the past to describe what happened and going to / would like to to talk about their new plans and wishes.

Use these questions if you need help:

  • Where did they decide to go?
  • What did they see there?
  • Was the new place better or worse than the original plan?
  • What would Sara like to do?
  • What are they going to do next?

Speaking challenge: Continue the story for 1–2 minutes.

THE UNEXPECTED OPPORTUNITY

B1

Sometimes, one unexpected opportunity can change your plans. Follow the story and decide what the characters do next, using experiences, future possibilities and consequences to develop the story.

For the last three years, Maya has worked at a small design company in her city. She has learned a lot there and has worked on many interesting projects.

Recently, she has started thinking about a change. She has always wanted to work with international clients, and she has also thought about living in another country.

One Monday morning, her manager asks her to come into the office.

Maya is a graphic designer. She enjoys her job, but she wants a new challenge.

Tom is her manager. He has worked with Maya for three years and knows that she wants to develop professionally.

Lina is Maya’s friend. She has worked abroad before and often encourages Maya to try new experiences.

Tom tells Maya that the company has received a new international project. The client is looking for someone who can work with the team for several months. Tom says:

“We think you could be the right person for this project.”

Maya is surprised. She has never worked abroad before. She has to make a decision.

Continue the story.

  • What does Maya decide?
  • What will happen if she accepts the project?
  • How does Lina react?
  • What has Maya learned from her previous experiences that can help her?

Try to connect events and explain why Maya makes her decision.

If you need more ideas, consider:

  • Has Maya ever had a similar opportunity?
  • What will she do if she accepts?
  • What could happen if she says no?
  • How has her previous work prepared her?
  • What might she learn from the experience?

Speaking challenge: Continue the story for 2 minutes.

THE MISSING PRESENTATION

B2

A problem at work creates more questions than answers. Follow the events, consider what the characters know and don’t know, and build your own explanation of what happened.

On Monday morning, a company is preparing an important presentation for a new client. The presentation has been prepared by a small team over several weeks. The final version has been saved on the company’s shared computer system.

At 9:00 a.m., the team arrives at the office. When they open the presentation folder, the final file is missing.

Alex prepared most of the presentation. He is sure that he saved the final version on Friday.

Nina manages the project. She needs the presentation before the client meeting at 2:00 p.m.

Daniel works in IT. He has been asked to find out what happened to the file.

Daniel checks the computer system. He discovers that an older version of the presentation was opened on Friday afternoon. Nina says that Alex told her on Friday that the presentation was finished.Alex says:

“I saved the final version. I’m sure of it.”

Daniel then finds a message from another employee saying that the computer system had stopped working for a few minutes on Friday. Now the team has several possible explanations.

Continue the story.

  • What happened to the final presentation?
  • Who discovered the solution?
  • What had happened before the file disappeared?
  • What should the team have done differently?

You can use reported speech to explain what the characters said and past modals to discuss possible explanations.

Use these questions to develop your version:

  • What might have happened to the file?
  • What could someone have done accidentally?
  • What should the team have checked earlier?
  • What did Alex say happened?
  • What had happened before Daniel found the message?

Speaking challenge: Tell your version of the story for 2–3 minutes.

THE DECISION THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

C1

One decision can have consequences that are difficult to predict. Explore the situation from different perspectives and build a nuanced ending by considering what happened, what could have happened differently and what may happen next.

For several years, Daniel has worked for an international organization that develops educational projects. He has recently been offered a position in another country. The opportunity would give him greater responsibility and access to projects he has always wanted to work on.

At the same time, Daniel has been developing an important project with his current team. The project is expected to be completed within the next few months, and he knows that his decision could affect the rest of the team.

Daniel wants to accept the new position, but he feels responsible for the project he is currently leading.

Sofia, his colleague, believes that the team could continue without him. She thinks the opportunity could be difficult to replace.

Martin, Daniel’s manager, has offered to change Daniel’s responsibilities so that he can consider both options.

Daniel has to give his answer by the end of the week. On Thursday, Martin tells him that the organization may change the structure of the current project. If Daniel accepts the new position, the project will have to be reorganized. If he stays, he may lose an opportunity that he has been preparing for for several years. Daniel realizes that there is no option without consequences.

Continue the story.

What does Daniel decide? Explore more than one possible outcome before choosing your final direction.

Consider:

  • What could have happened if Daniel had made a different decision?
  • How might the situation have changed if the project had been organized differently?
  • What will Daniel have achieved by the end of the year?
  • What will he have been working on if he accepts the new position?
  • How could his decision affect the other characters?

For an additional challenge, use conditional structures to explore alternative past and present situations.

If you need another perspective, imagine that you are one of the characters.

Daniel: What are you considering before making the decision?

Sofia: What do you think Daniel should do?

Martin: How could the organization respond to his decision?

Then explain how the story might look one year later.

Speaking challenge: Tell your version of the story for 2–3 minutes, developing your ideas rather than simply listing events.
